Researchers from the GBA’s Biomining community met from October 23-25, 2026 in Sisimiut, Greenland, for a workshop hosted by the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The event brought together colleagues from DTU, the University of Queensland (UQ), and Greenlandic stakeholders from government, industry, research and education.
The workshop provided an opportunity to discuss current activities, explore future collaboration opportunities and strengthen connections with partners in Greenland, Denmark and Australia. The program also included site visits and discussions on challenges and opportunities related to sustainable resource development and mine-site remediation.
The meeting builds on the growing collaboration between DTU and UQ in biomining and resource recovery, supported by six joint PhD projects. This collaboration is complemented by a new joint PhD project between UQ and the University of Exeter, while the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and UQ have developed a project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) to develop a novel assay platform aimed at accelerating the development of bio-based processes for metal extraction and separation.
Importantly, the workshop highlighted the continued momentum within the Biomining community and identified several opportunities for future collaboration involving GBA member institutions and external partners.
